You can start/stop/status your tools the following way:

# status vmware-tools

vmware-tools start/running

# stop vmware-tools

vmware-tools stop/waiting

# start vmware-tools

vmware-tools start/running

vmware tools pre start process terminated with status 1

Apparently the upstart file that vmware supplies is not correct, I didn’t have time to look into what was wrong, but I was able to start my tools by issuing the following command:

/etc/vmware-tools/ start
